KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 — Activist Hishamuddin Rais was arrested in Bangsar here today as he sought to join protesters at the Bersih 5 rally.
Before police took him away from Jalan Bangsar, he managed to give a speech, asking the crowd to go ahead with the protest and not be intimidated by the spate of arrests.
Some nine activists and pro-Bersih politicians, including Bersih 2.0 head Maria Chin Abdullah, were arrested last night ahead of the Bersih 5 street demonstration today.
Over 1,000 protesters have gathered at the Bangsar LRT station here so far, before they head to Dataran Merdeka.
The Bersih 5 rally organised by polls reform group Bersih 2.0 is calling for free and fair elections, a clean government and a stronger democracy.
