SHAH ALAM, Oct 8 ― The Langat and Cheras water treatment plants were shut down last night due to odour pollution suspected to be from the Semantan River in Pahang.

Selangor Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs executive councillor Elizabeth Wong said the Langat and Cheras water treatment plants were shut down at 8.30pm and 10pm respectively.

She said the outlet portal of Sungai Serai which receives water from a dedicated tunnel from Sungai Semantan, Pahang was discovered to have an unusual odour at 7.30pm yesterday.

“We have contacted the Pahang water resource agency which has informed the Pahang Department of Environment.

“The Kumpulan Air Selangor river surveillance team is currently in Pahang to assist them in tracking the source of pollution. At the same time, water from the Sungai Langat Dam was released at 9.45pm to mitigate the odour pollution in the raw water,” she said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Wong said several areas in Kuala Lumpur and parts of Petaling as well as Hulu Langat would be experiencing water disruption.

She said relief water supply would be delivered by tankers to affected areas and critical premises such as hospitals and dialysis centres.

Recently, the Semenyih water treatment plant was closed four times following contamination in Sungai Semenyih which resulted in water disruption in several areas such as Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Sepang and Petaling.
