KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has confirmed that it will carry on with its annual Educational Innovation of Motorsport and Automotive Race (EIMARace) despite an accident this year that killed two spectators.
UTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar said the annual race spurs innovation in students, The Star Online reported.
“Unfortunately, accidents do happen during races but we should not cancel the event as it encourages students to be innovative in building their own buggy for the EIMARace as we only provide them with the engine,” he was quoted saying.
Wahid said UTM will comply with the Higher Education Ministry's new guidelines when the next race is held.
“The ministry has come up with a new standard operating procedure, which is for UTM to have the race in a proper circuit.
“We are in the midst of identifying such a circuit,” he said.
A father and daughter were killed on September 25 where a go-kart rammed into spectators while they were witnessing the EIMARace 2016 in Kuantan, Pahang.
