KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi appeared as a guest on talk show Obviously Harith Iskander on Astro Awani last night.

Zahid, who made an entrance into the studio on his Harley Davidson motorcycle, displayed a lighter side as he shared tales of his love for bikes, his ambition to be a postman as a young boy and how he helped a Chinese man sell ice cream in primary school for six years.

He also shared the stage with seven of his grandchildren, who surprised him with a Father’s Day cake. Zahid admitted that like any other grandparent, he spoils his grandchildren a lot.

“I don’t get to spend much time with them, but I make sure I spend quality time with them,” he said.

Asked how a typical day spending time with his grandchildren was like, Zahid said he is always “forced” to accompany them to shopping malls.

On a serious note, Zahid said was once arrested under the Internal Security Act in 1998 and added: “I was patient and look where I am now.”

He also said the political landscape in the country had changed a lot since his days as Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s political secretary in 1973.

“Politics then was easier then. The demand has changed since and if we want to remain relevant, we must appeal to the intellectuals as they represent 40 per cent of the population in the country,” he said.
