KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) seized 113,000kg of various firecrackers throughout the country worth RM4 million since January until early June this year.
Its director-general, Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad said the firecrackers were smuggled in from a neighbouring country via land and sea routes.
“Smuggling activities especially involving firecrackers usually would increase as the festive season approaches due to the high demand.
“Thus, the RMCD had carried out operations for the past two months to curb the smuggling activities including firearms,” he told reporters after the prize presentation ceremony of the ‘Jom Minta Resit GST’ here, today.
Besides that, he said the customs department was also monitoring traders selling firecrackers and cloned cars online.
In the meantime, Khazali also reminded traders to always issue a receipt stating the Goods and Service Tax (GST) to the buyers, and the public also must ask for receipts as a practice each time they went shopping.
Errant traders can be fined under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act 2014.
Earlier, in the event, 20 lucky winners received prizes for the ‘Jom Minta Resit GST’ contest for the April-May period.
The contest which was launched last April was aimed at encouraging the consumers to ask a receipt for each purchase and increasing compliance among traders. — Bernama
