SABAK BERNAM, June 10 ― The police are examining the people who erected provocative political billboards in Sekinchan, the deputy prime minister today said.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the police were also regularly monitoring the parliamentary constituency to ensure there were no repeats of the incident.

“Police have opened investigation papers on those involved and checks are constantly being carried out so we hope there is no more of such act ahead of the June 18 poll,” he told a news conference at the district's police headquarters.

The billboards featured the Malay words “Panggil Cina babi tidak salah” (Not wrong to call Chinese pigs) that were attributed to Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Jamal Yunos as well as “BN PAS sehati sejiwa, rasis rasuah sama sekali” (BN and PAS are of one soul, together in racism and corruption). In it, voters were asked to choose Amanah in the June 18 Sungai Besar by-election.

They were removed by officers from the Election Commission on Wednesday.

Separately, Zahid said there were no untoward incidents reported in Sungai Besar since the campaigning period for the by-election kicked off on Sunday.

“Maybe it is the puasa (fasting) month or we have all reached a political maturity level... but I'm happy of this,” he said.
