IPOH, May 20 — The Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth movement is confident it can help secure a more than 3,000-vote majority in the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat by-election next month, if it can fend off the various issues raised by the opposition.

Its chief Hairul Anwar Mohamed Noor said the BN Youth was prepared with authentic information to counter accusations and slander, including the issue of the RM2.6 billion donation, which is often hurled by the opposition through social media.

He said the Youth movement would look to woo in voters, by approaching about 35 per cent of the 32,632 voters in the constituency.

“Although opposition parties say they have a chance, but we are confident with our strategy, and we and the party machinery have done an analysis, and are confident BN can defend the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat.

“The BN Youth will not hold programmes merely for self-indulgence, as we need a more detailed approach to listen to the expectations of the young voters, including those on the fence,” he told reporters after a meeting with BN component parties here, last night.

Hairul Anwar said the BN Youth would support anyone who was chosen as the candidate, and was ready to work in solidarity with other component parties to improve on-the-ground work at polling centres.

The Kuala Kangsar by-election is to be held following the death of its incumbent MP Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak, on May 5.

Also killed in the crash were Sungai Besar (Selangor) MP and Plantation Industries and Commodities Deputy Minister, Datuk Noriah Kasnon.

In the 12th General Election, Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar obtained a 1,082 vote majority, defeating PAS’ Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah, and independent candidate Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim.

The Election Commission had previously fixed the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections to be held simultaneously on June 18, while nominations would take place on June 5. — Bernama
