KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar announced today the set-up of a new department to combat men who sexually prey on children.
He said the Child Cyber Sexual Investigations Department was formed recently and will focus on men who coax Malaysian children into performing sexual acts.
“They do what is called ‘cyber sexual grooming’ on these unsuspecting children, who are convinced into sending videos and photos of them performing immoral acts,” he said during the closing ceremony of the Female Senior Officers Seminar 2016.
“In some cases, it went as far as them trying to convince the children into committing suicide.”
Khalid added that police were already monitoring social media for such activities, which he said included similar tactics seen in Casanova scams.
The IGP also urged Putrajaya to support the proposal to recruit more women into the force, saying they could help deal with domestic and women-related issues, and consequently reduce familial problems that contribute to crime.
Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, who was present, said bodies such as the Women’s Peace Police Squad (Amanita) and the Police Families Association (Perkep) will aid the police in tackling domestic crimes and community policing.
