PETALING JAYA, Jan 28 — Since its implementation in October 2014, the construction of the one-way loop project here has received numerous complaints.
Motorists have lamented the state of the roads and the confusion the project is causing, especially to those not familiar with the area.
The roads are peppered with plastic barriers and there is an abundance of potholes. Even the sidewalks have been ripped out, posing a danger to motorists and pedestrians alike.
Petaling Jaya City Council public relations officer Zainun Zakaria said the council had issued eight stop-work orders to contractors who did shoddy road repairs over the past year. However, they had to go on with the construction as they wanted to complete the project quickly.
Under the third phase, covered walkways will be built in Jalan Selangor and parts of Jalan Utara. However, the first phase is only 95 per cent completed and the second phase is only at 80 per cent.
Zainun said the council was confident of completing the entire project by the end of August.
The council’s engineering department director, Ismail Shafie, said a new system had been implemented to carry out patrols every two days to look out for potholes.
He said traffic congestion was inevitable because of various projects being carried out.
“There are many buses and cars parked illegally along the stretch of these projects that are also contributing to the traffic problem,” he said.
Ismail said the council would provide temporary walkways in place of the paths that were under construction.
“There are six pedestrian crossings at traffic lights and three pedestrian bridges that can be used to cross the road,” he said.
“Temporary lights have been installed at these places.”
