KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man warned party members today that they would not be allowed to run in the next general elections if they supported the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement.
He said any PAS lawmaker who did not oppose the free trade treaty would dropped from the Islamist party’s candidate list for the 14th general election.
“We will remove any PAS Member of Parliament who does not oppose the TPPA,” he said during his speech at the “Bantah TPPA” rally here.
He also urged the National Fatwa Council to issue a statement against the TPP, claiming it was not beneficial to Malaysians.
“We hope that everyone, the National Fatwa Council must make a statement opposing TPPA. The National Fatwa Council cannot remain silent and only speak out on food and drink issues,” he said.
Tuan Ibrahim also called on all political parties to only support policies that had the public’s best interest at heart.
“Thirdly, our rally is to express the public’s opposition to this TPPA and we ask all political parties, be it opposition or government parties, that the rakyat must be made a priority in all government matters,” he said.
An estimated 4,000 protesters from PAS, Parti Amanah Negara, Parti Sosialis Malaysia, as well as several NGOs, rallied in Kuala Lumpur today in a bid to urge Putrajaya not to sign the TPP that will be debated in Parliament next week.
