KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — Television series and movies shown by Netflix in Malaysia will not be censored, the online streaming service said.
A Netflix support expert told Malay Mail Online, however, that certain content may be unavailable due to regional licensing restrictions.
"Depending on your region, only the shows listed as available can be watched. But there will not be censorship within the shows that are available," said the Netflix staff from the US in a phone call without providing his or her name when asked.
According to US tech site The Verge, many shows on Netflix are only licensed to be streamed in certain areas, such as Better Call Saul that is available in the UK but not in the US.
Netflix was made available in Malaysia starting yesterday, with subscription priced at between RM33 and RM51 a month.
The US video-streaming service has become increasingly popular over the years, with popular television shows being made for Netflix, including House of Cards, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Narcos.
Malaysian satellite pay TV service provider Astro is still subject to censorship by local authorities, with complaints from some viewers about visuals and parts of certain shows being censored.
