GEORGE TOWN, Nov 18 ― DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today he never told PAS to merge with Barisan Nasional (BN) but to get “married” instead since his former allies in the Islamist party appear to have grown more supportive of the ruling pact.
He further explained that he sees PAS and BN as “the same” and should therefore team up.
“I didn't say merge, I only said since both are the same, then they should ‘nikah’, why wait anymore,” he told a press conference at the state legislative assembly today.
Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, was responding to PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah who accused him yesterday of making senseless suggestions by asking PAS to merge with Umno.
Mohd Amar, who is also Kelantan deputy mentri besar, reportedly told Lim to stop making such suggestions as PAS would not consider merging with Umno.
Lim,however, explained today that he was merely agreeing to an earlier remark by Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria that PAS and Umno are the same.
“I only agreed to what he said, both parties are the same. Support for PAS is equal to support for BN,” he said.
In recent months, Lim has been accusing PAS of becoming closer to Umno, following the fallout between the Islamist party and DAP in June.
When several PAS MPs abstained from voting for Budget 2016, Lim said this showed the party had been won over by Umno.
