KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 ― The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has barred access to a total of 1,074 pornographic websites in the country, with another 106 similar sites on the list to be barred, Putrajaya said today.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said the ban was implemented under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Salleh said in a statement that the ban on pornographic websites is part of the MCMC's “continuous effort to preserve good values upheld by the plural and multi-religious society in the country”.

The public are also encouraged to help police the internet by reporting websites suspected of promoting pornography by lodging reports with the relevant information with the MCMC at [email protected] or http://aduan.skmm.gov.my, he added.

Salleh, meanwhile, said that events such as today's Deepavali Open House ― which was hosted by Sabah MIC in Likas ― are an important avenue to foster a sense of mutual respect between races and preserve Malaysia's peace and harmony.

“I hope that we will be able to live in harmony on the basis of tolerance, which is very important in multi-racial country like Malaysia,” he said, adding that it is in line with the 1Malaysia concept that prioritises unity among the country's multireligious and multicultural society.
