BATU KAWAN, Aug 29 — A country’s success should not be measured solely by economic and technological progress, but must also be supported by the development of a knowledgeable and disciplined younger generation, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said young people should be provided with an education that also instils values, a spirit of service and a sense of responsibility towards their families, society and country.
“What is the meaning of development, what is the meaning of a country’s success if our children are not instilled with spirit, education, discipline and love? That is why our children must have such a spirit.
“Why do we acquire knowledge at schools, institutions of higher learning and universities? It is to become knowledgeable and morally upright individuals who are able to serve society, their parents and also the country. This is a culture that must be nurtured,” he said.
Anwar said this when officiating the 15th Malaysian Scouts Jamboree (MYJAM15) at the Penang State Stadium here today. Also present were Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Chief Scout Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Zin Bidin.
Commenting on current challenges, Anwar said that in navigating the rapid advancement of information technology and artificial intelligence (AI), the younger generation must not neglect their cultural roots and values, which form the foundation of society.
He said technological changes must be accompanied by the ability of the younger generation to adapt to new challenges without sacrificing the values and heritage that shape their identity.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of fostering unity in diversity, given that the younger generation would be the country’s future leaders.
Ahead of the 2026 National Day celebrations, he also urged the younger generation to continue nurturing their spirit of patriotism and be prepared to face future tests and challenges.
MYJAM15, which runs from today until Sept 4, brings together more than 5,450 local and international scouts from 11 countries, including South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
This year’s jamboree also marks a milestone as the national event returns to Penang after 60 years, since the state first hosted the event in Teluk Bahang in 1966. — Bernama
