KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — PAS will not be deploying its volunteer unit “Unit Amal” for the Bersih 4 rally that kicks off tomorrow, the group’s director Mohd Nazree Mohd Aris said today following the party leadership’s decision against mobilising members for the protest.
The unit, however, did not prohibit its members from joining, but said those who do so in their individual capacity should not don the “Unit Amal” uniform or carry any insignia representing the unit.
“In line with PAS leadership’s decision not to mobilise its members for the Bersih rally on Aug 29 and Aug 30 in Kuala Lumpur, the Unit Amal Department will not be deploying its members although they were the key security features of Bersih 1, Bersih 2 and Bersih 3.
“To avoid any provocation and sabotage by any quarters that are against Bersih 4.0, if any Unit Amal members are to attend the protest on their individual capacity, with this we prohibit them from putting on the unit’s uniform or carry any insignia that represents the volunteer corp,” Mohd Nazree said in a statement.
The group added that any members found violating the order will face disciplinary action. It also said it will not bear responsibility for the actions of any individual members found to have violated the order.
In previous Bersih rallies, PAS’s volunteer corps played a key role in marshalling participants and providing security, especially when all the demonstrations had massive turnouts.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan confirmed on August 24 that the Islamist party would not be mobilising its members for Bersih 4, but will only be sending representatives to show their support in the call for a clean and fair electoral system.
PAS, however, is not barring its members from participating in the two-day event demanding for institutional reforms and fair elections.
