PEKAN, July 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak told his voters in Pekan tonight not to believe all the allegations being bandied about on social media, saying they must be smart in knowing how to distinguish between the truth and false news.
The embattled leader, whose administration has been hit by numerous controversies, also assured his supporters in the Pahang constituency that he will continue to work hard as prime minister.
“I as PM will do the best, I will not disappoint the people. Please don’t believe every news that is uploaded on social media.
“Social media is a channel, doesn’t mean anything in social media can be consumed blindly. As humans, we must be able to make our own evaluations and not to blindly believe what is on social media.
“If the news is true, then it is true. If it’s fake, it will be fake. Not just about everything posted on social media can be believed,” he said during his speech at a break-of-fast event held in Chini.
Najib’s leadership has been dogged by several major controversies like the RM42 billion 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, which has become a central point to a concerted campaign by the opposition and those from within his own party to push for his resignation.
The prime minister’s family members have also been targeted in the corruption allegations.
Najib has vehemently denied the claims, however, calling the attacks slanderous.
Last Friday, the prime minister was for the first time accused of having a direct link to the 1MDB scandal after international business newspaper the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) claimed to have sighted documents proving that funds from the troubled state investor had been funnelled into his private accounts.
