ALOR STAR, July 3 — The Kedah Immigration Department has detained a local man as well as a Chinese illegal immigrant who tried to slip through at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex, Bukit Kayu Hitam yesterday afternoon.

Its director, Mohamad Yusri Hashim said the 46-year-old local man from Kubang Pasu was believed to be paid as ‘tekong’ to smuggle in the illegal immigrant, aged 48.

“At 3.20pm yesterday, the local man was in a Proton Saga car and entered the car lane to Thailand at the ICQS Complex, Bukit Kayu Hitam while the Chinese national sat at the back. Both failed to show any documents when asked to do so.

“The driver broke through the inspection barrier and shot off in the direction of Thailand, but was detained at the duty-free complex compound while the Chinese national was detained while hiding in the complex about 20 minutes later,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said the Chinese national was also found to possess Taiwan citizenship, while the stamp in his passport was false.

He added that the local man who was detained had been sent to the Immigration lock-up in Jitra while the Chinese national was sent to the Alor Star Immigration lock-up.

Mohamad Yusri said the local man would be investigated under Section 56 (1)(d) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 while the Chinese national was being investigated under Section 12 (1)(b) of the Passport Act and Section 56 (1)(l) of the Immigration Act. — Bernama
