PUTRAJAYA, July 3 — The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry today fixed ceiling prices for 21 items to prevent unreasonable hikes during the Hari Raya period.
Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said that the new pricing scheme will be enforced under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 for 17 days from July 7 to July 23.
“This scheme enables consumers to get items during Hari Raya at reasonable prices and prevent any unreasonable price hikes,” he told a press conference at the ministry’s office here.
Hasan further said that traders and companies who fail to comply with the ministry’s new pricing scheme for Hari Raya will face fines or jail terms.
A individual can be fined up to RM100,000 or be jailed while a company can be fined up to RM500,000 or compounded RM50,000.
The minister added that traders and companies can be also be punished for failing to display the ministry’s pink sign to indicate the new and fixed prices for the listed items.
Hasan also encouraged the public to report any cases of unreasonable price hikes during the enforcement period to the ministry.
