KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The country’s crime rate has been nearly halved from five years ago, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today.

Speaking at a breaking-of-fast event at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here, Najib credited the drop, particularly in vehicle theft, to the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).

“Since GTP was implemented, we have reduced crime rates and it has dropped by 40 per cent in the past five years.

“Twenty per cent of it is from car thefts. This is a true figure; if you don’t believe, you can ask the insurance companies because it is real and is not a figure that we are making up,” he said during his speech.

Najib also said the police force has been instrumental in helping curb crime, especially among the terror threats the country has received.
