KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — RM4.95 billion in Goods and Services Tax (GST) payments were collected between April and May, the Finance Ministry said today in a Parliamentary written reply to Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng.
Of the total, RM2.86 billion was collected from imports while RM2.09 billion was from the domestic market.
The ministry also said that the Customs Department has received 5,409 complaints involving GST as at the end of May.
Last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the GST is estimated to bring in RM23.2 billion in government revenue in 2015.
Najib, who is also finance minister, said that only RM5.6 billion will be left from the collection as RM17.6 billion was foregone from the GST-exempt goods and the abolishment of the Sales and Services Tax.
Malaysia started charging a GST of 6 per cent from April 1, to mixed response from the public.
