KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah is under investigation over the #KitaLawan rallies, the election watchdog said today following a sweep of arrests of opposition leaders.
Bersih 2.0 said in a statement that the Dang Wangi district police headquarters had called Chin last week and informed her that she would be probed over the recent #KitaLawan gatherings, with her statement scheduled to be recorded tomorrow.
“She will be present together with lawyers and will give her full cooperation to the police on April 28, 2015,” Bersih 2.0 secretariat Mandeep Singh said.
The police have been arresting opposition leaders in an ever widening dragnet over the #KitaLawan rallies that were held to pressure for the release of jailed Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad from PAS was even arrested last month in the dead of night at 3.20am in the #KitaLawan sweep.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has defended the arrests, saying last month that while the police respect freedom of speech and expression, there will be no “compromise” against those who cause public unrest.
