KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 ― The father of student activist Adam Adli Abd Halim died this morning after succumbing to injuries from a motorcycle accident in Penang.

Adam took to microblogging site Twitter at around 7.30am to announce the death of his father Abd Halim Abdul Hamid, who is said to be a strong supporter of his son's involvement in activism.

Abd Halim, 55, was reportedly involved in a motorcycle accident in Penaga, Penang, last night.

He was subsequently taken to Hospital Seberang Perai.

“Doktor baru dapatkan kebenaran untuk buat pembedahan pada Ayah. Usaha terakhir. Doa,” Adam tweeted at about 2am this morning.

But at 7.30am, Adam confirmed Abd Halim's death and announced that the funeral will take place after Friday prayers at the family home in Permatang Bertam, Kepala Batas, Penang.

Adam is a known student activist who first entered the media spotlight in 2011 when he took down a banner bearing the face of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak during a protest at the Umno headquarters. He was subsequently suspended from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris and has been arrested numerous times since.
