KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — Hundreds of people have converged at Padang Merbok for an anti-Goods and Services Tax (GST) rally today, as the opposition works at keeping up the momentum against the newly-introduced consumption tax.
The crowd began slowly trickling in as early as 3pm, seeking shade under the trees surrounding the field as they wait for the event — called Himpunan Derita Rakyat (Hindar) — to start.
As the norm with PAS events, the surrounding car park was populated with makeshift stalls selling everything from food and drinks to clothing and religious paraphernalia greeting new arrivals at the field.
Several hundred men and a clutch of women also came out to the field to perform Asar prayers, while others are seen having some tea and food in anticipation for the evening’s event.
Among the speakers for the rally include acting Dewan Ulama chief Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed and Temerloh MP Nasrudin Hassan, ahead of the PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang who is expected to be the last to deliver a speech at 9pm.
