KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — MCA and Gerakan are not censuring Umno over the Barisan Nasional (BN) anchor’s intention to back hudud law in Kelantan as the parties are afraid of losing their government posts, DAP’s Lim Kit Siang alleged today.
Continuing his diatribe against both BN components, the DAP parliamentary leader also claimed that the two were allowing Umno to “lure” PAS with promise of support in order to break apart the Pakatan Rakyat opposition pact.
“Now MCA and Gerakan’s sole raison d’etre is to be in the good books of Umno so that they can enjoy ministerial and state exco perks at the national and state levels,” he said in a statement today.
“For these objectives, they are prepared to support Umno’s conspiracy of a ‘Unity Government’ between Umno and PAS, as well as further the Umno conspiracy to destabilize, divide and destroy Pakatan Rakyat with the lure of Kelantan Umno state assemblymen supporting PAS hudud implementation in the Kelantan State Assembly later this month.”
According to Lim, MCA and Gerakan would have backed Umno’s plan even if the two had representation in the Kelantan assemblymen as they know that that the promised support for hudud was a plot to undo the PR pact.
Lim previously challenged MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Gerakan counterpart Datuk Mah Siew Keong to censure Umno for its promised support for PAS’s hudud ambitions, to demonstrate the sincerity of the two parties’ professed opposition to the Islamic penal code.
“I feel really sorry for Malaysians who in the past had supported MCA and Gerakan, for the degeneration of MCA and Gerakan to become totally principled political parties seemed to have reached a point of no return,” he said today.
PAS will table amendments to the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment II 1993 in the state legislative assembly on March 18.
It is also expected to table two private members’ bills in Parliament next month, which are aimed at removing constitutional obstacles currently preventing it from enforcing the hudud law that it enacted in Kelantan back in 1993.
