KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — A total of 37 low-ranking police officers were caught last year for drug-related offences.

All 37 were arrested for offences committed in the Dang Wangi district.

Apart from drug-related offences, several officers had worked part-time in night clubs.

The shocking revelation was disclosed during the monthly police gathering at the Dang Wangi police headquarters yesterday by district police chief ACP Zainol Samah.

Zainol urged his men to uphold the integrity of the police force and warned them to stay away from vice activities.

“The police are always under the radar of the public and politicians. When a small group of us slip up, the entire police force’s image will be tarnished,” he said.

Zainol said the number of policemen detained over drug-related offences was worrying.

“This problem can be avoided if we are committed to our work and make sure we are disciplined at all times,” he said.

Police sources said there were also few policemen attached with Bukit Aman, among the 37 caught.

“The 37 were detained, during random checks and also when urine test were conducted during the raids.”

The source said action has been taken against them, with some charged while some cases are ongoing.

“The officers involved had been demoted or even faced suspension.”

The source said among one of the officers who was working for a night club, is a 27 year-old officer attached to Bukit Aman.

He was beaten up and slashed in an early morning attack outside and entertainment joint in Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang on December 29.
