KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged all parties, both political and non-political, to unite and work as one team as the nation’s worst flood crisis in decades continued to drag on.
The Opposition Leader said every party should rally behind Putrajaya’s efforts to manage the crisis, which has left thousands of Malaysians displaced in at least six states in the peninsula.
He also urged for quick approval of funds to purchase medicines and food for distribution to critically-hit areas.
“I also suggest that the federal government prepare a comprehensive plan for the repairs and reconstruction works on some of the homes that were destroyed by the massive floods.
“Me, Azizah and the entire PKR family will continue extending our prayers to Allah to end these floods, and to lessen the burdens on all those affected,” he said in a statement here.
Anwar added that he has directed his party machinery in all states to offer their assistance in ongoing flood relief efforts.
A total of five deaths from the floods were recorded in Kelantan, three in Pahang and two in Terengganu to date, according to data from the National Security Council published on its website.
The extent of the worst flooding in decades has been such that Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is overseeing the government’s flood relief efforts, has warned that floods are worse than anticipated, saying that assets currently deployed were inadequate to face the floods of such proportions.
As at 8pm tonight, the total number of evacuees stands at 94,435 across six flood-hit states, according to the NSC.
