DECEMBER 28 — Many Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) students are dashing to the airport in Kota Baru to escape from the state’s worsening floods.

Star Online quoted UMK student Chuah Chia Ying, 21, as saying she bought a ticket to fly to the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang en route to her home in Penang.

“We were worried as the water level kept on rising near the students’ residence. So, a group of us decided to sleep over at the airport,” she said when met at Kota Baru’s Sultan Ismail Petra Airport yesterday.

Star Online also reported that the airport toilets had been used by travellers to take showers and all ATM machines were not functioning.

Economics student Siow Lean Hin, 21, told Star Online they reached the airport early to ensure that they did not miss their flights.

“We heard some of the flights were postponed. We just want to go home. We took the chance to come early and slept on the floor,” he said.

Another student, Chua Sin Ying, 21, said three people in uniforms came at 3am yesterday to distribute packed food and drinks.

“We were cold and really felt uncomfortable but at least somebody gave us food. There were not many shops open,” she said.
