Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the closure of a two-kilometre route at the bridge was for the safety of road users as the Sungai Kelantan was rising.

“I deny there are cracks as claimed. On the other hand, what was shown on Facebook was a connecting structure.

“The bridge connection was specially designed to allow the structure to move during hot or cold weather,” he told reporters at SK Pengkalan Chepa 1 flood relief centre here, today.

The bridge was closed to traffic at 5.30pm yesterday when the Sungai Kelantan water level rose over the danger level, and due to the presence of garbage and debris.

Mohd Amar said the closure was normal and need not be made an issue and urged all quarters against spreading lies as it could cause panic among the people.

There was also no necessity to declare an emergency in Kelantan because the disaster could be tackled well.

“The current flood is not as bad as in 1967, and even then, an emergency was not declared,” he added.

The current floods was caused by two days of heavy rain, especially in Gua Musang and Kuala Krai, which was equivalent to one month of rainfall. — Bernama
