KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 25 — A 14-year-old girl drowned here today, the first casualty of the floods in Terengganu.
Nurrashidah Baharuddin slipped and fell into Sungai Kesom while walking on the banks of the river with three friends at about 10am, said Terengganu Fire and Rescue liaison officer Rozizah Abni Hajar.
Two of the friends who tried to rescue her almost drowned. They were rescued by villagers, she said.
Nurrashidah’s body was recovered at 12.40pm by a fire and rescue team, aided by villagers, about three metres away from where she had fallen into the river, she added.
Rozizah also said that in Kemaman, the search for a married couple missing after falling into floodwaters in Kampung Geliga Che Akob during evacuation yesterday had been extended up to Kuala Kemaman.
She said the search team comprised 34 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department and the Royal Malaysia Police.
“Besides adding on more personnel, four boats are being used in the search for the couple,” she told Bernama.
