KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 — Having served three prime ministers so far during events at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Sukhidir Kemat has, over the years, become a recognisable face as “The Butler”.

He cuts a distinctive figure because of his height and has a serious demeanour but still manages to smile when he sees people who are familiar to him.

Shukidir said because of his extensive history of catering to the needs of the prime minister, other ministers would joke and compliment him.

“Even a simple gesture of holding a door open, a minister would tease me and say 'this is an honour ... he usually serves the prime minister only',” he said at PWTC yesterday where the Umno General Assembly is held.

“I feel humbled that they (ministers) see me that way, and some of them even come looking for me for assistance.”

Sukhidir, 51, has served three prime ministers in his 29 years as a butler.

They are Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and currently, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He is also PWTC's liaison manager.

His day starts as early as 6.30am and ends at 1am the following day during the general assembly.

Starting off at age 22, he said the journey had been memorable and that all three leaders were “the best”, adding that each had their own preferences and character.

“All of them are good leaders. None of them are fussy, and the job gets easier when you know their preferences,” he said.

“When I was young, I used to get excited when my photo appeared in the newspapers. I would cut out the article or photo and even frame some of the newspaper clippings for keepsake,” he said.

Sukhidir said even some taxi drivers would recognise him from his images that appeared in the media.

“They would ask me, 'you are always next to the prime minister, right?', and they would insist on getting to know my story,” he said.

“It can be overwhelming sometimes because I take the taxi so I can relax on my way home.”

He said the taxi drivers would ask him questions on the leaders, his work and political issues.

Nowadays, however, the thrill of his image appearing in newspapers does not excite him as much.

His longest tenure was with Dr Mahathir whom he served for 18 years and still maintains a close relationship with.

“I will meet and greet him whenever he comes to PWTC,” he said.

Sukhidir said time and age had slowed him down and it was time to give the opportunity to others.
