SINGAPORE, June 26 — The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) busted a drug syndicate believed to be distributing heroin in Singapore and seized about 2.1kg of heroin.

Five suspects, including the mastermind of the syndicate were arrested, CNB said in a statement Thursday, saying the heroin seized was estimated to be worth more than S$220,000 (RM563,200) and enough to sustain about 1,000 heroin addicts in Singapore for a week.

In the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday, several CNB teams were deployed in various parts of Jurong West and tailed a suspected syndicate leader, a 47-year-old Singaporean male, his syndicate members and one of their client, a 66-year-old Singaporean drug trafficker.

All were believed to be awaiting for a fresh consignment of drugs which were brought into Singapore by a drug courier.

CNB officers deployed in the vicinity of Jurong West Avenue 1 spotted the suspected drug courier, a 34-year-old Malaysian, meeting up with the 66-year-old suspected Singaporean drug trafficker.

After the drug trafficker and the Malaysian parted ways, a party of CNB officers tailed and arrested him (Singaporean) along Bukit Batok East Avenue 3 and seized about 670gm of heroin from the man.

The same Malaysian man was subsequently spotted meeting up with one of the syndicate members, a 44-year-old male Singaporean and when both parted ways, CNB officers arrested the Malaysian and recovered 955g of heroin and cash totalling S$10,000 (RM25,600) from his vehicle.

Another 32-year-old Singaporean syndicate member who was believed to be proceeding to meet the Malaysian was also arrested with S$7,200 (RM18,400) cash.

Rounding up the operation, a party of CNB officers raided the house of the 47-year-old syndicate leader.

All five suspects are being investigated for drug trafficking which carries the mandatory death sentence if convicted. — Bernama
