KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — MCA’s decision in not contesting in the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election is to give priority to strengthening the party, said its president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
He said the party’s main focus now was to concentrate on the various transformation programmes after its poor performance in last year’s 13th general election (13th GE).
“We need to recover after the loss, in fact, we have a very important agenda of focusing on the issue relating to PAS proposal to implement the hudud law,” he told reporters after attending the ‘Caring and Sharing 2014’ programme organised by Brickfields Buddhist Maha Vihara here today.
The Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Karpal Singh in a road accident on April 17.
In the 13th GE, the late Karpal Singh defeated MCA candidate Teh Beng Yeam of Barisan Nasional (BN) by a majority of 42,706 votes.
Earlier in his speech, Liow said unity, togetherness and being stronger together were basic necessities for a peaceful and progressive nation.
“With simple acts of kindness, it can transcend all borders — race, religion status and lead to something so powerful and empowering, like unity,” he said.
He said care in the community was a partnership when everyone worked together to find new ways of helping those less unfortunate.
“A strong bond is made when we consciously choose to give a part of ourselves to those in need, because we genuinely care,” he said.
In conjuction with Wesak celebration, Brickfield Buddhist Maha Vihara held their annual ‘Caring and Sharing’ event aimed to remind people that giving back to society, regardless of race, religion or creed is an important part of being Buddhist devotees. — Bernama
