KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 ― PKR vice president N. Surendran today slammed the authorities for arresting a political activist under counter-terrorism laws and called for his immediate release.
“We are shocked and appalled by this arrest of a political activist under counter-terrorism laws.
“No evidence whatsoever has been produced linking Saiden with any kind of militant activity. If there is any such evidence of terror activity, why not charge Saiden in open court?” Surendran said in a statement.
On April 30, Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia activist Saiden Ismail was arrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA).
SOSMA replaced the Internal Security Act (ISA), Malaysia’s detention without trial law but has also been criticised for the wide powers it grants the authorities.
“In its effect SOSMA is similar to the ISA, as no bail is allowed pending trial and appeals,” Surendran said.
The group which Saiden belongs to is a strong critic of the federal government.
“We are also gravely concerned for Saiden's well-being, in view of the physical abuse and torture that happened to detainees under the old ISA,” Surendran added.
