KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will likely announce fresh developments related to the reduction in the search area for the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 at his press conference tonight, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said today.
The Defence and acting Transport Minister had earlier announced that the surprise press conference will be held at 10pm, believed to be regarding new information in Australia’s search for the aircraft in the southern Indian Ocean.
“There is some development. Whatever it is, like I said just now, the focus is to reduce the search area,” Hishammuddin told reporters as he rushed out of Parliament here.
“So if anything that PM announces it is in relation to the reduction.”
Shortly after he was addressed the media at today’s daily press conference, Hishammuddin briefed Parliament on the status of the missing MH370.
This comes following complaints from Pakatan Rakyat (PR) MPs last week that they were not invited to another briefing session, which was organised exclusively for Barisan Nasional MPs.
But today’s briefing session turned out chaotic as PR MPs hounded Hishammuddin on the alleged lateness of Malaysian authorities in starting their search and rescue operations.
The search for MH370 in the Indian Ocean turned up more possible sightings of the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner today, this time of two objects — one circular and one rectangular.
Hishammuddin confirmed the sightings at the daily press conference this evening, and said the Australian Navy vessel, the HMAS Success, is in the vicinity and should be able to retrieve the objects within the next few hours or by tomorrow at the latest.
The two objects spotted today are the latest to be sighted by search teams scouring the Indian Ocean — which falls under the southern corridor of the international operation to find the Malaysia Airlines-owned Boeing 777-200.
