KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 — Businessman Datuk Shamsubahrin Ismail wants the government to replace the entire top management of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), claiming the transport regulator had failed to enforce laws on errant taxi drivers at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

Alternatively, SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar should resign his post, said Shamsubahrin, whose company Awana Sutera Travel and Tours Sdn Bhd runs the premier blue taxi service around the commercial and tourist hub.

“As far as I’m concerned, he has not performed his duty correctly,” he told reporters at his office at Wisma Central here today.

Shamsubahrin said that only taxis registered with his company are allowed to pick up passengers at the busy tourist area, and in turn, they pay the company a monthly fee of RM200 that goes to the security guards who keep unregistered taxis out.

He added that his company has been the sole taxi operator at KLCC since 2010, and that the fare charges for passengers followed the meter rate, unlike other taxi services.

Awana Sutera now owns 80 taxis with more than 100 others registered with it, he said.

This is not the first time Shamsubahrin has called for Syed Hamid’s head to roll.

He was reported previously to have demanded Syed Hamid be axed, claiming the SPAD chief had failed to revamp the taxi system nationwide.
