KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — Nurul Izzah Anwar and Raja Ahmad Shahrir Raja Salim said today they will do their best to keep their marriage in tact, after reports of their alleged attempt to annul the union surfaced in the media.
The husband and wife team said in a joint statement here that they were disappointed by the reports, and appealed for privacy from the public.
“We are deeply saddened by the undignified intrusion into our private lives and will do our utmost to work out our continuing union.
“Our family is our priority, as is our time together,” the duo said.
Earlier this afternoon, Nurul Izzah denied that she had filed to annul her marriage to Raja Ahmad when the matter was raised on micro-blogging site Twitter.
“@msaiful82 wassalam. Nope,” she wrote.
The Star reported on its website today of her rumoured divorce, and said she filed a petition to the effect with the Syariah Court.
The English-language newspaper claimed that she made the application last December, and that Raja Ahmad was served with the divorce papers on January 16.
Raja Ahmad wed the daughter of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on May 2, 2003 and the two have a son and a daughter together.
In a later update, The Star added that checks with the lower Syariah Court here showed that the application was received.
It also added that court officials confirmed that both Nurul Izzah and Raja Ahmad were listed as parties in the divorce petition.
In another report, the news portal cited sources close to the family as saying that the PKR lawmaker plans to withdraw the petition tomorrow, purportedly after the couple was urged to reconcile.
