GEORGE TOWN, Jan 23 — The state government will buy 51 units of low-cost flats in southern Seberang Prai for its rent-and-buy scheme.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said yesterday the purchase of the units in Taman Seruling Emas was in line with the state’s intention to offer more low-cost homes for the lower income group.
The total cost is RM750,000.
Lim said the project was a collaboration between the state and developer Syarikat Asas Dunia Berhad.
The company had refurbished the units as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, he told a press conference at Komtar.
The management of the units would be given to the Housing Division under the state secretary’s office.
“The screening of applicants will be conducted by the Selection Process Enhances Committee to ensure only those eligible will rent the flats,” he said.
Under the scheme, successful applicants would have to pay a monthly rent of RM100 and another RM20 for maintenance fee for 15 years. After that, they will own the units.
The two five-floor blocks comprising 360 units measuring 51 sq ft were completed in 1994.
Of the 360 units, 309 units are occupied.
