JELI, Jan 11 — Kelantan has been hit by a second wave of floods this season with 897 people forced to relocate in Jeli and Tanah Merah as of this evening.
Jeli Fire and Rescue chief, assistant superintendent Soleh Nasir said 832 of the victims were from Jeli while 65 were from Kampung Lawang and Batu Gajah in Tanah Merah.
He said Sungai Golok in Jenob, Jeli had started overflowing in the afternoon and the residents in several villages in Ayer Lanas had to be moved.
“As at 8 pm the Golok river recorded 24.77 metres, past the 23.5-metre dangerous level. The other rivers are still at the critical level and rising slowly,” he told reporters.
The victims from Jeli were evacuated to the Sungai Satan Umno building, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Legeh, Kampung Gemang Mosque and Sekolah Menengah Ayer Lanas, he added.
All main roads are still open and there have been no casualties reported so far, he added.
Meanwhile, Minah Rahmat, 56, a victim at the SK Legeh relief centre said her family of five had to leave their house this morning.
“We have to move out every year due to the floods. Although it’s comfortable and safe here, I wonder for how long more do we have to face this problem,” she said.
The first wave of floods early last December involved the evacuation of almost 3,000 flood victims from six districts but Jeli was not affected at the time. — Bernama
