KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 — A group of voters is preparing to take a politician to court for not fulfilling a promise made during the 2008 election campaign, especially to those who had voted the assemblyman into office.

Some 50 members of the Ulu Klang Recreation Club (UKRC) will protest at the assemblyman’s office today, seeking an explanation on why their field and clubhouse had been taken over by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) without good reason and in an unlawful manner.

The club’s former secretary N. Werasinggam, 62, told The Malay Mail yesterday that the clubhouse and the field had been managed by the club since 1956.

“During the campaign period for the 12th general election, PAS candidate Saari Sungib (who was voted in as the Hulu Kelang assemblyman) stated that he would ensure the field and clubhouse would be retained by the club without any repercussions. This promise was not fulfilled,” Werasinggam said.

“Last year, the Selangor government reneged on its 2008 promise of handing over the ownership of the field to UKRC. Instead the state maintained the 2004 gazette which is for MPAJ to manage the field.

“The decision proved a slap in the face for UKRC’s 1,000 members as well as Hulu Kelang residents who claimed they had voted Pakatan into the Hulu Kelang seat based on the promise the field would be de-gazetted and returned to the club.

Saari in a Facebook post said: “In the beginning of my term as Hulu Kelang Selangor state assemblyman in 2008, I supported the efforts for a land title to be given to the club but circumstances and actions purposely taken by certain individuals did not allow this to come true.”

Saari said he had asked the Selangor government to either amend the 2004 gazette or to revoke it and issue a new land title for the club.

On Oct 1, MPAJ announced the land came under its purview and was open to the public.

Werasinggam said: “Saari had fooled us. We are ready to sue him for breach of trust as he has not heeded the calls from the public. This follows a legal letter sent to MPAJ as force was used to break the main gate of the club on Oct 1 without a court order.”
