ALOR SETAR, Oct 12 — Kedah PAS has submitted eight names as prospective candidates for Sungai Limau by-election to the party headquarters.
Kedah PAS commissioner Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the PAS candidate will be announced by party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on October 21 in Sungai Limau, Yan.
“It is understood that the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate will be announced on October 21 afternoon while the PAS candidate will be announced at night. All eight are pupils of Ustaz Azizan ( former Kedah menteri besar Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak ), ” he told a press conference here today.
Mahfuz who is also PAS vice-president said although many people consider Sungai Limau as a safe seat, the party should not underestimate the BN challenge.
“I believe that BN will try to seize Sungai Limau because prior to 1995, the BN and PAS took turns in winning the seat,” he said. The Election Commission (EC) had fixed nomination for Sungai Limau by-election on October 23 with polling on November 4.
Sungai Limau state seat was declared vacant following Azizan's death on September 26.
In the May general election, Azizan retained Sungai Limau seat by beating his cousin Fazillah Mohd Ali of BN with a majority of 2,774 votes. — Bernama
