KUALA TERENGGANU, Oct 5 ― The Barisan Nasional (BN) is optimistic of wresting the Sungai Limau state seat Kedah in the by-election for it on November 4, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said to realise the mission, Umno’s election machinery would be put on “overdrive” mode.
"We can win back the seat if we work hard and there is no splits among the local leaders,” he told reporters after attending a function on security matters here today.
The seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak of PAS. Azizan was also the Menteri Besar of Kedah when PAS ruled the state for one term after the 2008 general election.
On security matters, Ahmad Zahid said he was proud to note that Terengganu had a zero crime rate for serious crimes.
He said this was possible because of concerted efforts by the police, civil society movements and the public at large.
He added that the government would be making available various facilities to further improve the police’s delivery system in the state, including upgrading the state police headquarters and police stations.
In Gurun, Umno information head Datuk Ahmad Maslan, who is also Deputy Finance Minister, said he did not expect Umno’s polls, scheduled for October 12 and 19, to have much impact on the by-election.
“Umno polls is a family affair. The by-election outcome is very important and as such, it is vital for the Umno and BN machinery to go all out to wrest the seat from PAS,” he told reporters after attending an Umno function. ― Bernama
