KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — Since the National Service training programme started in December 2003, a total 23 deaths at camps nationwide have been reported. 

The main reasons for the deaths are drowning and health issues like viral infection. 

Apart from that, sexual assault, rape and fights have also taken place.

An 18-year-old trainee, R. Vinoth, died after having fever for three days. According to the post-mortem, Vinoth had succumbed to leptospirosis, or commonly known as the “rat fever”.

Abdul Malik Ishak, 18, was found dead on his bed at Kem Guar Chenderai,  Padang Besar, Perlis. He had no medical condition as shown on his health declaration form.

A brawl involving 100 trainees broke out in the canteen of Lake Chini Resort Camp, Pahang. The fight started when trainees were instructed to arrange the table and some inadvertently shoved each other.

Seventeen trainees were arrested and held at the Pekan district police lock-up for two days before being released after a meeting with their parents.

An 18-year-old trainee claimed she was sexually assaulted by more than 20 unidentified men at Lake Chini Resort Camp, Lake Chini, Pahang, while making a call from a phone booth on camp grounds at night. 

She declined to return to camp after the incident.

Awang Mohd Fazil Awang Borhan, 17, died when he was swimming with 36 other trainees at Sungai Cina, Matang, Kuching, Sarawak.

A female trainee, 17, was raped by in a car in the Rhu Tapai agro-industrial estate near Setiu. Corporal Zuki Mohd, 30, was jailed 12 years and ordered to be caned three times for the offence.
