KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — Celebrity preacher PU Abu has asked not to be addressed as ustaz due to the numerous controversies surrounding him.
The 29-year-old instead asked to be addressed by his given name Abu, or his full name Mohd Abu Sufyan Mokhtar Rozaidi, Kosmo! reported.
According to Abu, the term ustaz comes with heavy responsibility.
“I am not a ustaz and am not comfortable to be addressed as ustaz, I am happier if people would call me Abu or Abu Sufyan.”
“When there is a title, it means that one cannot sin and must be innocent. I admit that is heavy. Hence this is me, not ustaz or PU (Pencetus Ummah).”
According to Abu, the title given to him was not an award that would put him together with religious scholars but instead it was a test.
“When I got the title, I tried my level best to guard it as I saw the title as a test for me and not an award," explained Abu, who participated in the third season of Astro’s religious reality programme Pencetus Ummah,
Abu added that ustaz are also humans who are not free from sin.
“Every human, their tests are different whether they are ustaz, religious scholars or normal humans.”
Now an operations manager for a tour agency based in Saudi Arabia, Abu said most of his time was now spent at Mecca and Madinah due to work.
The father of five went viral on social media due to his marriages to two women.
It started in 2019 when he divorced his then heavily pregnant wife Ain Afini Latiff to marry divorcee Nurhannah Azra Mohd Zakir.
That marriage too ended in divorce but Abu recently revealed that he had reconciled with both women and they are now in a polygamous relationship.
