COPENHAGEN, June 5 — The municipality of Copenhagen has launched a new parking stand specially designed to accommodate cargo bikes, supporting their increasingly widespread use throughout the city.
Copenhagen is seeking to accommodate the growing number of cargo bikes in circulation in the Danish capital. Here, a quarter of families with two children own at least one cargo bike. They mainly use them to transport their children to nursery, school or extracurricular activities.
This new cargo bike parking stand has recently been installed in around 20 locations, notably near bus stops, to encourage people to use public transport for longer journeys. Others are being installed near shopping areas and day-care centres. In principle, each parking stand can accommodate two cargo bikes, depending on its location. This means that it would be possible to fit up to four cargo bikes of different sizes on a standard car parking bay.
This new rack is aligned in keeping with the standards of the classic bike racks already installed throughout the city, facilitating its integration into the urban space. Called “pq-rack,” it takes the shape of a P and a Q when viewed from the side. Its raised curves enable a cargo bike to be locked with a chain without the chain resting on the ground, ensuring a secure hold. Plus, the curves are turned inwards to prevent visually impaired people from bumping into them and injuring themselves.
These new racks offer numerous advantages, starting with their low cost and ease of maintenance. They add to an already long list of infrastructure that has long encouraged the use of bicycles, with Copenhagen already standing out for the originality of its cycle-friendly buildings, bridges and roads. — ETX Studio
