KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — A traveller has been caught trying to smuggle a handgun inside a raw chicken in the United States.

The matter was revealed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) via its social media following the incident at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida on Monday (Nov 7).

The unidentified person had tried to conceal the gun, which was wrapped using a thin paper, inside the chicken that was stashed in their carry-on luggage, CBS News reported.

In a punny-filled caption, TSA said as Thanksgiving nears, air travellers should be thankful its officers are working around the clock to keep them safe.

"We hate to beak it to you here, but stuffing a firearm in your holiday bird for travel is just a baste of time. This idea wasn't even half-baked; it was raw, greasy, and obviously unsupervised. The only roast happening here is this poor packing choice!" the caption continued.

It added that there are rules for traveling with guns and ammunition.

They are required to pack unloaded weapons in locked, hard-sided containers in their checked bags, and must declare those items at the airport ticket counter when they arrive for their flight.

According to the station, this was not the first time the TSA found something extraordinary.

Last year, a chainsaw was flagged in New Orleans and something called a "meth burrito" was confiscated in Houston.
