LOS ANGELES, Oct 22 — While there is no shortage of innovative technology built into running sneakers, Under Armour has turned its attention to a whole different subject: zippers. In what they hope will revolutionize zipping up your sports gear, the brand has introduced the one-handed magnetic zipper, MagZip.

The new technology uses a powerful magnet on each end of the zipper’s bottom clamp, which effortlessly snaps together to zip up your jacket, at least according to a video released from Under Armour.

While details are a bit scant, Under Armour says consumers can expect to see MagZip in some 400,000 jackets by autumn 2014.

Last Friday, Under Armour recently hosted a competition to lure inventors working on clever sports designs, with winners rewarded a US$25,000 (RM79,200) grand prize and a contract with the brand. Two years ago, the winner was the maker of the one-handed zipper. This year’s winner was the designer of a motion-based lighting system dubbed Light Bohrd, which can be built inside of shirts for joggers who run in the dark. The technology is driven by rechargeable lithium batteries embedded into the shirt. Other gadgets on display included a hoodie with a retractable winter facemask and a running shoe with a built-in air conditioner. — AFP-Relaxnews
