SINGAPORE, Aug 21 — Singapore is set to build a new 670-megawatt (MW) Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) generating unit that will provide the capacity needed for the growth of energy-intensive sectors, according to the Energy Market Authority (EMA).

EMA in a statement yesterday said it had awarded Tuas Power Generation Pte Ltd the right to build, own and operate the new hydrogen-ready CCGT unit, which is expected to commence commercial operations by December 2031.

The unit will be able to meet the electricity demand of up to 1.2 million households annually, it said.

“These CCGTs powered by natural gas will provide reliable baseload power while we pursue diverse pathways to a cleaner energy future,” said EMA chief executive Puah Kok Keong.

According to EMA, Singapore’s electricity demand is expected to grow rapidly over the next several years, driven by strong economic growth, transport electrification and the expansion of energy-intensive sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing and data centres. — Bernama
