SINGAPORE, May 11 — An 18-year-old cosplayer accused of assaulting convicted child sex offender Amos Yee at an anime convention in Suntec Singapore has been charged with assault and being a public nuisance.
According to The Straits Times, Bosco Chun Ho Wang appeared in court via video link from the Central Police Division today and was accused of committing the offences at about 2pm on Saturday.
Court documents stated that Chun allegedly punched and kicked Yee, 27, but did not state why he allegedly attacked him.
Chun was also accused of being a public nuisance by shouting, punching and kicking Yee.
He was offered bail of S$5,000 (RM19642.50), with his case fixed for mention on June 2.
The incident took place during a pop-culture event called Doujima, also known as Doujin Market, which was held at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday and Sunday.
Videos circulating online showed a person dressed as the character Yuji Itadori from the manga and anime series Jujutsu Kaisen attacking a man as bystanders looked on.
In an earlier statement, Doujima’s organisers said the altercation occurred after Yee was told he was banned from the event and had left the convention area.
They said Yee had been barred and his tickets cancelled after he announced his intention to attend.
“We want to reiterate that we do not condone violence and our priority is the safety of our visitors and exhibitors,” the organisers said.
Yee, who returned to Singapore in March after being removed from the United States, has also been charged in Singapore under the Enlistment Act over alleged national service-related offences.
He was granted asylum in the US in 2018 but was jailed there in 2021 for grooming and sexually exploiting a minor.
