LONDON, March 10 — Since April is coming, you can’t really blame Game of Thrones’ (GoT) fans for having all things related to the fantasy drama on their minds.
Yesterday, when news broke that legendary producer and “Fifth Beatle” George Martin had died, many GoT fans flooded Twitter with posts mourning his passing for completely different reasons.
It turns out they had mistaken him for author George RR Martin, creator of the beloved fantasy series.
“RIP IN PEACE GEORGE RR MARTIN CREATER OF GAME OF THRONE,” wrote one user with the handle @chetkelly69.
Many people swiftly realised their mistake, but took time to recover from the shock, such as @MeganMishMash who tweeted: “I thought I read George RR Martin died, dif George Martin Nearly fainted, thank the Old Gods and The New.#allmartinsmustdie just #nottoday”
Others were far more concerned that they would not be unable to read the sixth GoT novel, Winds of Winter, which Martin is currently writing.
“RIP George Martin. Hopefully this serves as a warning to George RR Martin to finish the damn books,” said @Terry_Denness89.
Yesterday, Martin seemed mildly amused by the whole palaver, and took to his LiveJournal blog to reassure everyone that he was “not dead yet”.
“I expect to hang around for quite a while yet,” he wrote.
“While it is strangely moving to realise that so many people around the world care so deeply about my life and death, I have to go with Mark Twain and insist that the rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated.
“But thank you all for caring.”
