BATU PAHAT, Sept 14 — A two-year-old girl mauled by stray dogs outside her grandmother’s home in Kampung Tambak, Peserai, is expected to undergo reconstructive surgery soon as she continues to fight for her life.

Nur Haira Wafiqah Mohammad Hamizi was critically injured in the Sept 6 attack by five dogs, suffering severe head and facial wounds. 

As reported by Berita Harian, Haira’s aunt, who wished to be identified only as Nur, 23, said doctors had informed the child’s parents that reconstructive surgery was the best option given the extent of her injuries.

“We were told that ordinary treatment or surgery would not be suitable. Haira can now breathe on her own without respiratory support. She has also opened her eyes, though there is no response yet. The medical team is still monitoring her condition, and we ask everyone to pray for her recovery,” she said.

Nur also told BH that before all the dogs involved in the attack could be captured, villagers in Kampung Tambak, Peserai, were confronted by another pack of strays.

She said around 10 dogs were spotted in an oil palm plantation behind the victim’s grandfather’s house, and their presence was even recorded on video before they disappeared.

“I believe 10 other dogs appeared at the plantation around 11am today. Previously, the authorities caught seven dogs, including five puppies, which attacked Haira. Three more have yet to be captured and are still roaming near the house.

“Now another pack of strays has emerged, raising fears they could cause further problems and disturb residents. We do not want a repeat of what happened to my niece,” she said.
